Russia Strongly Condemns the Terrorist Attack on a Church in Damascus

On Sunday, 25 people were killed and 63 wounded in the terrorist attack against the Mar Elias Church.
On Monday, Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Russia strongly condemns the terrorist act committed during a mass at Mar Elias Church in Damascus.

“We resolutely condemn this heinous terrorist attack that killed absolutely innocent people. We offer our condolences to the families of those killed and wish a speedy recovery to those injured,” she stated and ratified the solidarity of the Russian nation with the Syrian people in the face of “this unthinkable crime.”
“We reaffirm our principled support to sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity in Syria and readiness to contribute to a long-term normalization of the military and political situation in the region,” Zakharova noted out.
On Monday, the Syrian Health Ministry confirmed that 25 people were killed and 63 wounded in the attack by a suspected member of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group against the Mar Elias Church in Duweila, Damascus.
On Sunday, Interior Minister Anas Khattab indicated that the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber affiliated with the IS terrorist organization, who entered the church, where he “opened fire and detonated his explosive vest.”
Specialized teams have launched investigations to determine the circumstances of the attack. However, so far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, although it is the first attack of this magnitude in Damascus since the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime on December 8.
In recent months, Syrian authorities have announced the dismantling of cells and the arrest of several members of terrorist groups such as the Islamic State, an organization that was defeated territorially in Syria in 2019 but remains present in some desert areas of the country.
